Mesogenic pitch
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013273
An optically isotropic pitch, rich in aromatic hydrocarbons and low in quinoline-insoluble matter, that contains no anisotropic particles visible under the microscope but forms carbonaceous mesophase when heat treated above about 750 K. It is the precursor from which mesophase pitch is made. The mesophase it forms is a discotic nematic liquid crystal.
