Mesogenic group

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013272

The rigid part of a molecule that induces liquid crystalline, or mesomorphic, behavior. This structural unit is responsible for the formation of ordered fluid phases (mesophases) due to its anisotropic shape, which is often rod-like (calamitic) or disc-like (discotic). In liquid crystal polymers, these rigid mesogenic groups are frequently connected by flexible spacer units, which provide mobility.
