Calamitic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012937
Describing molecules or parts of molecules that possess a rod-like or lath-like shape. These elongated structures are a common feature of low molar mass and polymeric liquid crystals, where they tend to align parallel to one another to form anisotropic mesophases. The specific alignment of calamitic mesogens gives rise to distinct liquid crystalline phases, such as the nematic phase, which has orientational but not positional order, and the smectic phase, which has both.
