Liquid-crystal state
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006689
A state of matter that exhibits properties intermediate between those of conventional liquids and solid crystals. It possesses long-range orientational order, characteristic of crystals, but retains the fluidity of a liquid. This anisotropic fluid phase is often observed in certain organic molecules with elongated or disc-like shapes, which can align themselves spontaneously.
