Mesogen
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007212
A compound whose molecules, given the right temperature, pressure or concentration, organise into a mesophase, in particular a liquid-crystal phase. Most mesogens have a rigid, rod-like or disc-like core, and its shape decides whether nematic, smectic or columnar phases form. The rigid part of a molecule that drives this behaviour is called the mesogenic group.
