Smectic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010953
Describing a liquid-crystal state, or mesophase, in which the constituent molecules exhibit both orientational order and positional order in one dimension. The molecules align their long axes in a preferred direction and are arranged into distinct layers. Within these layers, the centers of mass are disordered, giving the phase liquid-like properties in two dimensions.
