Smectic mesophase
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010954
A liquid crystalline state where molecules are organized into well-defined layers, exhibiting one-dimensional positional order. Within these layers, the molecules possess two-dimensional liquid-like disorder, allowing them to move freely. Different smectic phases, such as Smectic A and Smectic C, are distinguished by the orientation of the molecular long axes relative to the layer normal.
