Carbonaceous mesophase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001647

A liquid crystalline phase formed during the pyrolysis of certain organic precursors, such as coal tar pitch, at elevated temperatures. This phase consists of disc-like aromatic molecules that align themselves into an ordered, anisotropic structure. It is an intermediate stage in the formation of graphitic carbons and carbon fibers.
