Spherical carbonaceous mesophase
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011185
Microscopic, anisotropic liquid crystalline spheres that form during the carbonization of pitches and tars at elevated temperatures. These spheres consist of highly ordered, disc-like aromatic molecules that align parallel to each other. They are precursors to the anisotropic texture found in many cokes and graphites.
