Ileum

The final and longest section of the small intestine, extending from the jejunum to the cecum. Its primary function is the absorption of vitamin B12, bile salts, and any remaining nutrients not absorbed by the jejunum. The ileum is characterized by the presence of Peyer's patches, which are lymphoid nodules involved in immune surveillance.
