Mesentery

A double fold of peritoneum that suspends part of the digestive tract from the posterior abdominal wall; the mesentery proper tethers the jejunum and ileum of the small intestine. It carries the blood vessels, nerves and lymphatics that supply the bowel, together with fat and connective tissue. Its root runs obliquely for about 15 cm, from the duodenojejunal flexure to the ileocecal junction.
