Exothelium

A sheet of flattened epithelial cells lying outside an organ or tissue. The name contrasts with endothelium, the flattened cell layer that lines the inside of blood vessels, lymphatics and the heart. It is not a connective tissue layer and it is not part of the tunica intima of a vessel.
