Intrinsic factor

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006031

A glycoprotein secreted by the parietal cells of the stomach lining that binds to vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin. This binding forms a complex that facilitates the vitamin's subsequent absorption in the terminal ileum. A deficiency of intrinsic factor, caused by autoimmune conditions or gastric surgery, leads to pernicious anemia.
