Pernicious anemia
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008678
An autoimmune condition characterized by a deficiency in vitamin B12, caused by the body's inability to absorb the vitamin from the gastrointestinal tract. This malabsorption results from the immune system attacking intrinsic factor, a protein necessary for B12 uptake, or the parietal cells that produce it. Diagnosis often involves measuring vitamin B12 levels and intrinsic factor antibodies.
