Efflux pump
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003609
A transmembrane protein that actively transports substrates, such as drugs, toxins, and metabolites, out of a cell. This process requires energy, often derived from the hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), to move substances against their concentration gradient. The P-glycoprotein is a well-studied example of an efflux pump responsible for multidrug resistance in cancer cells by expelling chemotherapeutic agents.
