Active transport of drugs

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000194

The movement of drug molecules across a biological membrane against their concentration gradient, requiring energy expenditure by the cell. This process involves specific carrier proteins that bind to the drug and facilitate its translocation. Active transport systems are saturable and can be inhibited by other substances competing for the same carrier.
