Carrier protein

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001682

A protein that binds to a specific substance, such as a small molecule or ion, and transports it across a biological membrane or through the bloodstream. In immunology, a large protein molecule is used to make a small molecule (a hapten) immunogenic by covalently binding to it, forming a hapten-carrier conjugate for use in assays. For membrane transport, these proteins undergo a conformational change to move the bound substance from one side of the membrane to the other.
