Hapten

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005097

A small molecule that can provoke an immune response only when it is bound to a larger carrier molecule, such as a protein. By itself, it is too small to be recognized by the immune system. The hapten-carrier complex then acts as a full antigen, stimulating antibody production.
