Photocontact dermatitis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008832
A skin inflammation that develops when a chemical in or on the skin is activated by light, usually ultraviolet A. In the phototoxic form the activated chemical damages cells directly, with no immune involvement, while in the photoallergic form it becomes a hapten that sensitises the immune system and causes a delayed-type reaction. Phototoxic dermatitis can occur on first exposure, whereas photoallergy needs prior sensitisation.
