Photosensitivity

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008925

An abnormal reaction of the skin to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or artificial sources. This reaction can be phototoxic, where a substance absorbs UV light and causes direct tissue damage, or photoallergic, where UV light alters a substance into an allergen that triggers an immune response. Photosensitivity is a common diagnostic criterion for systemic lupus erythematosus, where exposure to sunlight can exacerbate skin lesions and systemic symptoms.
