Photoconductivity
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008831
An increase in the electrical conductivity of a material caused by absorbing light, which creates mobile charge carriers, for example by exciting electrons from the valence band to the conduction band of a semiconductor. Photoresistors made of cadmium sulfide and the photoconductive layers of xerographic drums rely on it, whereas solar cells work through the photovoltaic effect at a junction.
