Indirect bandgap semiconductor

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005777

A semiconductor material in which the minimum energy of the conduction band and the maximum energy of the valence band occur at different points in the crystal momentum space. For an electron to transition from the valence band to the conduction band, a change in momentum is required, often involving a phonon. Silicon is a prominent example of an indirect bandgap semiconductor.
