Photogenerated charge carrier
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008872
A mobile electron or hole created in a material, such as a semiconductor, upon the absorption of a photon with energy equal to or greater than the material's band gap. The photon excites an electron from the valence band to the conduction band, leaving behind a positively charged hole in the valence band. These carriers are responsible for photoconductivity and drive the chemical reactions in photocatalysis and photoelectrochemistry.
