Hole

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005334

A conceptual positive charge carrier in a semiconductor or insulator, representing the absence of an electron in a valence band. When an electron moves from one atom to another, it leaves behind a 'hole' that can also move through the material, contributing to electrical conductivity. The mobility of holes is a key parameter in the performance of organic electronic devices.
