Hold-up volume

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005333

The total volume of the mobile phase within a chromatographic column, including the interstitial volume between particles and the volume within porous particles that is accessible to the mobile phase. This volume represents the space occupied by the mobile phase that an unretained compound would experience. It is a key parameter in chromatography, often denoted as VM or V0, and is used in calculating column efficiency.
