Mobile-phase volume
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007440
The total volume of the mobile phase contained within the entire chromatographic column, including the volume within the porous particles of the stationary phase and the volume between the particles. This volume, also known as the hold-up volume, determines the retention time of an unretained compound. In size-exclusion chromatography, the mobile-phase volume represents the maximum possible retention volume for any analyte, as all molecules must elute by this point.
