Retention volume of the stationary phase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010295

The volume of liquid stationary phase that remains held inside the column throughout a counter-current chromatography run. The liquid is kept in place by a centrifugal or gravitational force field, with no solid support, while the other phase is pumped through as the mobile phase. Dividing this volume by the total column volume gives the stationary phase retention.
