Retention volume

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010293

  1. The volume of mobile phase that passes through a chromatographic column from the point of sample injection until the peak maximum of a specific component is detected. It is a measure of how strongly a compound is retained by the stationary phase. Retention volume is typically expressed in milliliters.

  2. The volumes of mobile phase required to elute different components from a chromatographic column, measured from the point of sample injection to the peak maximum of each component. These volumes are characteristic for each substance under specific chromatographic conditions. They are fundamental parameters for quantitative and qualitative analysis in chromatography.
