Quasiparticle
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009774
An emergent excitation of a many-body system that behaves like a particle, with its own effective mass, momentum, energy and mobility, although it cannot exist outside the system that hosts it. Examples in polymers are polarons, which are charges dressed by a surrounding lattice distortion, and excitons, which are bound electron-hole pairs.
