Peierls distortion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008582

A distortion of the crystal lattice in one-dimensional metallic or semiconducting systems that leads to a lowering of the electronic energy by opening a band gap at the Fermi level. This structural change results in the dimerization of atoms and transforms the material from a conductor to a semiconductor or insulator. It is a consequence of electron-phonon coupling.
