Verwey transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012555
A first-order phase transition observed in magnetite (Fe3O4) at approximately 120 K, characterized by a sharp change in electrical conductivity and magnetic properties. This transition involves an ordering of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions on the octahedral sites of the inverse spinel structure, accompanied by a structural distortion. Below the transition temperature, magnetite becomes an insulator.
