Exchange-inversion transition

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004173

A first-order phase transition in a solid where the sign of the magnetic exchange interaction between neighboring atoms or ions inverts. This change occurs as a function of temperature, pressure, or composition, leading to a switch in the magnetic ordering, such as from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic. The transition is accompanied by a discontinuous change in the unit cell volume or another lattice parameter, reflecting its first-order character and the strong coupling between magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom.
