Photocarrier
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008808
A mobile charge carrier, either an electron or a hole, generated within a material upon the absorption of a photon. In semiconductors, photon absorption with energy greater than the band gap excites an electron from the valence band to the conduction band, creating a negative photocarrier (electron) and a positive photocarrier (hole). These photocarriers are responsible for photoconductivity and can drive photochemical reactions at the material's surface.
