Mitochondrion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007417
A double-membraned organelle found in most eukaryotic cells, responsible for generating the majority of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through cellular respiration. Often referred to as the 'powerhouse of the cell,' it also plays roles in calcium signaling, cell differentiation, and apoptosis. Each mitochondrion contains its own circular DNA molecule.
