Ligases

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006578

A class of enzymes that facilitate the formation of a covalent bond between two molecules, a process that is coupled with the hydrolysis of a high-energy phosphate bond in a molecule like adenosine triphosphate (ATP). These enzymes are involved in processes such as the joining of DNA fragments by DNA ligase or the synthesis of larger biological molecules from smaller precursors. Ligases are systematically classified under EC number 6 in the Enzyme Commission numbering system.
