Glycolysis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004941

A metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose into two molecules of pyruvate, generating a small amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) in the process. This pathway occurs in the cytoplasm of nearly all living cells and is the first step in both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. It does not require oxygen and produces a net gain of two ATP molecules per glucose molecule.
