Protein fragmentation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013446
The cleavage of a protein into smaller pieces. In tandem mass spectrometry of intact proteins, as in top-down proteomics, it is the dissociation of protein ions by methods such as collision-induced, electron-capture or electron-transfer dissociation, which yields fragment ions that carry sequence information. Cleavage with proteases or chemical reagents before analysis is called proteolysis.
