Unimolecular dissociation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012435

A fragmentation reaction of an ion with molecularity one, in which the ion breaks into a smaller ion and a neutral fragment once its internal energy exceeds the activation energy for dissociation. The energy comes either from excess energy of a metastable ion formed in the ion source or from collisional excitation of a stable ion, as in collision-induced dissociation. The product ion spectrum gives structural information about the precursor ion.
