Collisional activation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012986

A process in mass spectrometry where ions are energized by collisions with neutral gas molecules, leading to their fragmentation. The kinetic energy of the ions is converted into internal energy, causing bond cleavages. This technique is widely used in tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) for structural elucidation of molecules.
