Precursor ion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009363

An ion selected in a mass spectrometry experiment that undergoes fragmentation to produce other ions. This initial ion is typically isolated in a mass analyzer before being subjected to collision-induced dissociation or other fragmentation methods. The mass-to-charge ratio of the precursor ion is measured before fragmentation.
