Precursor complex

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009362

An intermediate complex formed between two or more molecular entities that precedes the main chemical transformation in a reaction mechanism. In the context of electron transfer, it is the complex formed by the reactants within an encounter complex prior to the electron transfer event itself. The geometry and electronic structure of this complex influence the rate and outcome of the subsequent reaction step, which leads to the formation of a successor complex.
