Encounter-controlled rate

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003881

The rate of a chemical reaction that is limited by the frequency at which reactant molecules diffuse together to form an encounter complex. In such reactions, the activation energy for the chemical transformation within the complex is very low, making diffusion the slowest step. These rates are typically observed for very fast reactions in solution.
