Diffusion-controlled termination

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003201

A mechanism in polymerization where the rate of termination is limited by the diffusion of reactive species. As the polymer chains grow, the viscosity of the reaction medium increases, hindering the movement of macroradicals. This effect, known as the Trommsdorff effect or gel effect, leads to an autoacceleration of the polymerization rate due to a decrease in the termination rate constant.
