Auto-acceleration
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000959
An increase in the rate of polymerization observed in some radical polymerization reactions, particularly at high monomer conversions. This phenomenon, also known as the Trommsdorff effect or gel effect, is attributed to a decrease in the termination rate constant as the viscosity of the reaction medium increases. It leads to a rapid rise in temperature and molecular weight.
