Auto-ionization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000987

The spontaneous dissociation of a molecule into ions without external influence, often occurring in pure liquids where solvent molecules react with each other. This process establishes an equilibrium between the neutral molecules and their corresponding ions. A common example is the auto-ionization of water, forming hydronium and hydroxide ions.
