Diffusionless transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003202
A phase transition in a solid that occurs without long-range atomic migration or any change in chemical composition. Atoms move in a cooperative, organized manner over distances smaller than the interatomic spacing, leading to a change in crystal structure. Martensitic transformations, which are responsible for the hardness of quenched steel, are a primary example of this type of transition.
