Displacive transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003315
A type of diffusionless phase transition in a solid characterized by small, cooperative displacements of atoms from their original lattice positions. These atomic shifts result in a change in crystal symmetry but do not involve the breaking or formation of chemical bonds. The transition between the alpha and beta forms of quartz at 573 °C is a classic example of a displacive transition.
