Psychoactive

Describing a chemical substance that, when ingested or administered, crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts primarily on the central nervous system. Such substances alter brain function, resulting in temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness, cognition, or behavior. Psychoactive substances are classified based on their effects, including stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, and antipsychotics.
