A psychoactive substance that temporarily increases alertness, attention, and energy by enhancing the activity of the central nervous system. These compounds often work by increasing the levels of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. Examples include caffeine, nicotine, and amphetamines, which can have both therapeutic and recreational uses.
