Stimulated emission
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011417
The process by which an excited atom or molecule, when perturbed by an incident photon of appropriate energy, is induced to emit a second photon with identical energy, phase, and direction. This phenomenon is the physical basis for laser operation, where a population inversion is maintained to amplify light. The emitted photon is coherent with the stimulating photon.
